They see seven times better than we do, and can hear mice a half-mile away. Owls, as they always have, continue to be a source of wisdom, spiritual and intellectual. From owls we can learn the wisdom of a happy and productive life, look more deeply and listen more closely. Trust our own senses and instincts.

In Ancient Greek mythology the Owl was a creature sacred to Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. Athena was so impressed by the great eyes and solemn appearance of the Owl that, having banished the mischievous crow, she honoured the night bird by making him her favourite among feathered creatures. Athene’s bird was a Little Owl, (Athene noctua). This Owl was protected and inhabited the Acropolis in great numbers. It was believed that a magical “inner light” gave Owls night vision. With this companion on her shoulder, unseen truths to her were revealed. As the symbol of Athene, the Owl was a protector, accompanying Greek armies to war, and providing ornamental inspiration for their daily lives. If an Owl flew over Greek Soldiers before a battle, they took it as a sign of victory. The Little Owl also kept a watchful eye on Athenian trade and commerce from the reverse side of their coins.
However, while the owl was seen by the Greeks as a protector, the Romans saw it more as a harbinger of doom. Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar even has his death foretold by the hooting of the owl.
The Owl, symbol of the Goddess, represents perfect wisdom. Owls have the ability to see in the dark and fly noiselessly through the skies. They bring messages through dreams. The Owl is the bird of mystical wisdom and ancient knowledge of the powers of the moon. With wide-open, all-seeing eyes, Owl looks upon reality without distortion and acknowledges it, yet is aware that with ancient magical and spiritual knowledge, he or she can make changes.
